The Voice Across the World
A reader in the EU wrote to say this book came at exactly the right time. Here is what that means to me — and to you.
I received a message this week that stopped me in my tracks.
A reader in the EU — a woman I have never met, in a country I have never visited — wrote to tell me that Confessions of an Imposter came into her life at exactly the right time.
She said: "Your strength, your honesty, your personality… I just admire you so so much."
I read it three times. Then I sat quietly for a long while.
When Words Travel Further Than You Expect
When I was writing this book, I was thinking about the women I knew. The ones in boardrooms who looked confident but felt like frauds. The ones who had climbed every rung of the ladder and still waited for someone to tap them on the shoulder and say, "Actually, you don't belong here."
I was not thinking about readers across the EU.
I was not thinking about how a voice — my voice, narrated so beautifully by Sarah Kowalchuck — would travel through headphones to a woman on the other side of the world and make her feel less alone.
But that is exactly what happened.
The Right Time Is Never When You Think
She wrote something else that stayed with me: "I only wish I had something like this to hear when I was younger."
I understand that feeling completely. I spent decades wishing someone had told me sooner that the doubt I carried was not a sign of weakness — it was a sign that I cared deeply about doing things well.
But here is what I have come to believe: the right time is not the earliest possible time. The right time is the moment you are ready to hear it.
She was ready. And the book found her.
What Imposter Syndrome Looks Like Across Borders
One of the most humbling things about this journey has been discovering that imposter syndrome does not respect geography, culture, or language.
It shows up in the same way whether you are in Texas or anywhere across Europe. That quiet voice that says you are not qualified enough, not experienced enough, not enough — it speaks every language.
And so does the antidote.
Honesty. Courage. The willingness to say: I felt like a fraud, and I kept going anyway.
She Said She Wants Everyone to Read It
Her message ended with something that made me laugh and cry at the same time.
She said she wants everyone to read it, listen to it — and one day watch it. She hopes someone turns it into a movie.
I am not going to lie: I have thought about that too.
But more than any screen adaptation, what I want is exactly what is already happening. I want this book to find the woman who needs it most, at the moment she needs it most, wherever she is in the world.
If You Have Been Waiting for the Right Time
Maybe you have been thinking about reading Confessions of an Imposter and you keep putting it off. Maybe you have been waiting until things settle down, until you feel ready, until the timing is better.
Here is what I want to tell you: the timing is never perfect. But sometimes, it is exactly right.
The audiobook is available now on Amazon, narrated by Sarah Kowalchuck. You can listen while you walk, while you drive, while you sit quietly with a cup of tea and let someone else's story remind you of your own strength.
Or if you prefer to hold the words in your hands, the paperback and Kindle editions are waiting for you too.
To the reader in the EU: thank you. You have no idea how much your message meant to me. This is exactly why I wrote it.
